Renowned documentary filmmaker Aslaug Holm takes us on a journey that bridges generations.

"Brothers" tells the story of the close relationship between the brothers Markus and Lukas as they grow up in Oslo, Norway in the mid 2000s.
The film describes their childhood over a period of eight years, and plays out in their local district of Sagene by the river Akerselva.
Markus loves soccer, and wants to be a professional. Lukas is more of a philosopher asking questions about the world, about himself, and what it’s all about.
Sometimes, what they want and need is the direct opposite of being a loving son or brother.

The movie is a poetic story about their childhood universe, a unsentimental look at the boy´s everyday family life,
where they learn the truth about the world and about themselves.

"Brothers" is created by the boy´s mother. She has directed, shot and edited this beautiful feature length documentary.
We also learn more about her own background, including her childhood on the picturesque fishing island of Smøla on the west coast of Norway.
All these elements are woven together to create a larger existential picture of life itself.

I loved this movie from the first time I saw the offline edit. It is an engaging piece of storytelling, where a lot of people will recognize things from their own childhood.
All the challenges, questions, ups and downs of growing up. Being curious and full of adventure.

The movie contains a varied selection of image sources, ranging from DVCAM, DSLR, old 8mm and stunning 16mm film.
Getting all this to flow together was quite a challenge. The director and I developed three main looks:

- Dreamy / poetic Smøla island: A rich warm look with hints of cyan.
- Urban everyday Oslo: A desaturated gritty look.
- Dramatic archival fishing scenes: A faded, cold teal look.

A lot of work went in to fiddling with RGBY-curves, adding grain and texture to the images to make the different formats blend better together.
Grading the 16mm / Super 16mm footage was the most enjoyable for my part. The footage was just divine!
It has been al long time since I have graded proper film footage. When it comes to dreamy imagery, it beats digital any day.

"Brothers" has it´s premiere at Trømsø International Film Festival 13.01.2015. While the main theatrical release is 20th March 2015.
Be sure to check out this wonderful movie. Take your familiy to see it. They will love it, I promise!
